World Water Day 2023
Mar 22, 2023 — Mar 22, 2023World Water Day 2023 will focus on accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. Issues across the water cycle undermine progress on every major global issue, from health to hunger, gender equality to jobs, education to industry, disasters to peace.
In 2015, the world committed to achieving the 2030 Agenda's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – the pledge that everyone will have safe water and sanitation management by 2030. Currently, this goal will be hardly accomplished.
The celebration of this World Water Day coincides with the start of the UN Water Conference 2023 (March 22-24, New York), the event is a unique opportunity to unite the world in order to solve the water crisis and sanitation, in the Italian delegation to the Conference there will also be a researcher from ISPRA.
In the side event organized by FAO, the work on the "Italy" pilot case and the disaggregation of the SDG 6.4.2 indicator (Level of water stress: freshwater withdrawal as a percentage of available freshwater resources) at district scale will be presented hydrographic, work conducted by ISPRA in the context of a specific agreement with FAO, and with the support of Istat
On 23 March ISPRA is organizing the conference "The silent revolution of water", promoted as part of the WHOW project (Water Health Open knowledge), whose objective is the creation of a distributed European infrastructure capable of connecting environmental and health data.
UN 2023 Water Conference
Mar 22, 2023 — Mar 24, 2023The second UN Conference on Water kicks off today in New York, co-organized by the Netherlands and Tajikistan with the United Nations.
During the opening ceremony, UN Secretary General Guterres reiterated the risk to resources and ecosystems due to water scarcity.
ISPRA is participating with the Italian delegation in the interactive dialogues on the theme of integration between States for the protection of water and ecosystems and for the mitigation of flood and drought risk in a constantly changing and evolving climate.

Earthquake event in Turkey, February 6, 2023
Feb 06, 2023An earthquake of magnitude M 7.9 was localized at 02:17 Italian time on 6 February 2023 in the south-eastern part of Turkey, on the border with Syria. The earthquake had a hypocenter about 20 km deep and was strongly felt throughout the southern area of Turkey and also in Syria.
Due to the high magnitude and relative proximity to the sea, the Tsunami Alert Center-INGV had issued a tsunami alert for the Mediterranean, the alert returned at 7.15 am Italian time.
ISPRA has the task of providing real-time sea level data detected by the tide gauge network to the INGV Tsunami Warning Centre, which verifies the possibility that a specific seismic event with an epicenter in the sea, or near areas coasts, can generate a tsunami, estimating the arrival times of the waves and the potentially affected coastal stretches. INGV avails itself of the collaboration of ISPRA for the confirmation of a possible tsunami and rapidly informs the DPC which is responsible for launching the alert throughout the national territory, mobilizing all the components of the civil protection system.
World Wetlands Day
Feb 02, 2023 — Feb 02, 2023World Wetlands Day is celebrated on 2 February each year to raise awareness of the important role these areas play for people and our planet. Wetlands, such as lagoons, are among the most productive environments in the world, characterized by a high biological diversity.

They were more than 60 experts were present, representing the institutions that manage the warning systems for earthquakes and the possible consequent tsunamis in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea basin and in the European part of the Atlantic Ocean.
The meetings served to present the progress of the systems for detecting rising sea level (for Italy, ISPRA with its monitoring stations is responsible) and rapid warning systems for tsunami-genic seismic phenomena.

Observed data and modeling tools for bathing water management
Nov 03, 2022 10:45 AM — Nov 03, 2022 04:30 PM Rome, Hotel massimo D'Azeglio - Via Cavour 18The Bathing Directive (2006/7 / EC) requires that the pressures (eg. river mouths, discharges and urban wastewater treatment plants) having the greatest impact on the environment and health be identified and characterized. The Directive also places emphasis on the concept of prevention and the importance of forecasting possible episodes of pollution.
The objective of the Workshop is to show the potential of the products available under the Copernicus Program, comparing the monitoring and modeling experiences carried out in the various Italian Regions. Furthermore, the Workshop will be an opportunity to collect user needs and to promote the use of a homogeneous approach on a national scale to solve the critical issues related to the management of bathing water.

The "invisible waters" of Rome : monitoring of groundwater, a precious resource to be protected and enhanced
Jul 18, 2022The Geological Survey of Italy and the Municipality of Rome signed an agreement to monitor the groundwater of the city. The subsoil of the capital of Italy is not only rich in ruins of the Roman civilization, but also in groundwater. The monitoring network has more than 200 monitoring points between wells and piezometers, some of which are continuously monitored. Groundwater level, temperature, pH and electric conductivity data are collected and recorded on a web app that will soon be available online. In order to raise the public awareness of this activity, ISPRA produced a documentary video entitled "What flows under our feet?" in which the monitoring details are explained.

Drought and water resources: in the last 30 years (1991-2020) water availability reduced by 19% compared to the thirty years 1921-1950
Jul 08, 2022What are the short, medium and long-term trends and impacts of climate change on the hydrological cycle and, in particular, on the availability of water resources? The situation that emerges from the first assessments carried out by ISPRA is decidedly not reassuring and a reduction in the availability of water resources is expected at national level, ranging from 10% in the short-term projection, (in the case of an aggressive mitigation approach in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions), up to 40% (with peaks of 90% for southern Italy) in the long-term projection, assuming that the growth of greenhouse gas emissions maintains the current trend.

In the Universe there are billions of galaxies, in ours there are billions of planets, but there is only one planet Earth. In order for all its inhabitants to survive, humans must lead a sustainable lifestyle, safeguarding limited resources and remaining in harmony with nature. In the Conference of 1972, 26 principles were identified on the conservation and enhancement of the environment, which after 50 years remain a useful guide to follow.

World Water Day 2022
Mar 22, 2022 — Mar 22, 2022World Water Day is celebrated on 22 March, an anniversary established by the United Nations in 1992 as part of the directives of Agenda 21, the result of the Rio conference. The theme chosen for 2022 is "Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible".
Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere. Out of sight, under our feet, the water table is a hidden treasure that enriches our life.
Almost all liquid fresh water in the world is underground. As climate change escalates, groundwater will become increasingly critical. We must work together to sustainably manage this precious resource.
