Sectorial Reference Document

The Sectorial Reference Document, provided for in art. 46 of EC Regulation 1221/09 EMAS, are created by the European Commission in order to identify and promote: "... the best environmental management practice, environmental performance indicators for specific sectors, where appropriate examples of excellence and classification systems that make it possible to determine the levels of environmental performance ".

The Sectoral Reference Documents (SRDs) on Best Environmental Management Practice provide guidance and inspiration to organisations in specific sectors on how to further improve environmental performance.

These documents are elaborated by consulting the Member States and the Stakeholders of the various sectors concerned and making use, for their development, of the Joint Research Center (JRC), the internal scientific service of the European Commission.
