Flamingos appeal

A general census of all the flamingos in the area of the Regional Park of the Po Delta is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2. About 20 qualified detectors coordinated by ISPRA will join the Park technicians to detect how many flamingos are present and how they are distributed. This year the local production in the park has been scarce, but the influx from other areas should have filled up the shortfall. Will be asset which colonies have exported more young flamingos into the delta and if the new colonies founded in replacement of Comacchio (Venice Lagoon and Diaccia Botrona in Tuscany) still have a link with the mother colony. Why so much attention towards this species, which currently has no conservation problem? Because it is a species-flag, emblematic of coastal wetlands in the Mediterranean. The flamingos monitoring is followed by an international working group that ensures uniformity of approach to all initiatives  held at the local level.
