Ecology of Avian Influenza Viruses in Siberia

Activities and measures aimed at Nature conservation and research and monitoring of natural resources increasingly need a multidisciplinary ecological approach, based on the study of interactions between habitats and ecosystems.

On this concept is based the organization and editing of the book "Siberia: Ecology, Diversity and Environmental Impact", which includes the result of an intense collaboration between the National Research Novosibirsk State University, the University of Bologna, the Italy’s National Institute for Health and ISPRA. In particular, ISPRA was involved in editing the chapter "Ecology of Avian Influenza Viruses in Siberia", which analyzes and discusses the complex ecological interactions and the factors that, in the context of global change, can modulate, within the vast Siberian region, the circulation of the influenza A virus gene pool in the wild aquatic bird reservoir and the possible viral spillover from this natural reservoir to other avian and/or mammalian species, humans included.
