ISPRA monitoring campaign in La Spezia Gulf for the IMPACT Project
As part of the IMPACT Project (Port Impact on Marine Protected Areas: Cross-Border Cooperative Actions), ISPRA, project partner, contributes to assess the impacts of port activities on protected marine areas, measuring the presence of organic and inorganic contaminants. On Friday 8 November, near the Island of Palmaria - included in the Marine Protection Area of the Porto Venere Regional Natural Park, and not far from the Port of La Spezia - the ISPRA researchers took several samples of surface sediments, on board of the ship Astrea. The collected samples will allow to assess in laboratory, the concentration levels of the main pollutants deriving from port activities, such as polychlorobiphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals.
