This day aims to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and to support countries to undertake at local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as planting campaigns for trees and shrubs.
Forests cover one third of the Earth's emerged lands, playing vital functions worldwide. Forests are the most biologically diversified ecosystems on earth. Biologists think that to over 80% of terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects live inside.
Also this year ISPRA has contributed to the celebration of this day, producing divulgative document , addressed to both the media and citizens, trying to provide information on the state of the world and national forests and which presents some of the most current issues about the loss of forests and valuable services related to forest biodiversity they guard.
