Greenhouse gas emissions reduced in 2019

ISPRA presented the National Inventory Report 2021 and the Information Inventory report 2021 on 15 and 16 April. In 2019 greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 19% compared to 1990, from 519 to 418 million tons of CO2 equivalent and by 2.4% compared to 2018. The decrease is due to the growth in recent years of energy production from renewable sources to increase energy efficiency in industrial sectors and reduce the use of coal. The energy production and transport sectors remain responsible for about half of the national greenhouse gas emissions. The decrease in emissions from the energy industries sector was significant which, again compared to 1990, fell by 33% in 2019, against an increase in thermoelectric energy production from 178.6 Terawatt hours (TWh) to 195.7 TWh, and in electricity consumption from 218.7 TWh to 301.8 TWh.

Wolf returns in the Circeo National Park

The wolf is returning to occupy many of the areas from which it had disappeared due to direct persecution by man. For about a year, sightings of some specimens have also been recorded within the territory of the Circeo National Park, where already in the summer of 2020 the Institute of Applied Ecology, on behalf of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Biodiversity and Parks , and with the support of the Carabinieri Biodiversity Department of Fogliano, had detected the presence of a couple in the forest and a female. Genetic analysis found the individuals to be wolves.
