New EU Forest Strategy : planting three billion additional trees across Europe by 2030
As a flagship initiative of the European Green Deal, the European Commission has recently adopted the New EU Forest Strategy for 2030.
The EU Forest Strategy sets a vision and concrete actions for increasing the quantity and quality of forests in the EU as a fundamental part of the solution to the climate change and to the loss of biodiversity, and for strengthening their protection, restoration and resilience. The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 sets outs a pledge to plant at least 3 billion additional trees by 2030 in full respect of ecological principles with a long-term planning and monitoring. European citizens will have the possibility to follow the progress and keep track of the tree planting through a website and an online interactive map with an integrated ‘Map-My-Tree' counter developed by the European Commission together with the European Environmental Agency. The commitments and actions proposed in the Strategy will contribute to achieve the EU’s greenhouse gas emission reduction target of at least 55% in 2030, as set out in the European Climate Law which will be implemented by the measures laid out in the recent EC Fit for 55%package. In addition to the new EU Forest Strategy the Fit for 55% package includes also the following new legislative proposals:
- Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)
- ReFuelEU Aviation
- FuelEU Maritime
- Social Climate Fund
With this strategy, the Commission is presenting an ambitious vision, building on the strong engagement, motivation and dedication of all forest and land owners and managers. The new EU Forest Strategy aims to make an important contribution from the EU to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, in particular the Goal 15.
