Citizen science project on freshwater molluscs with the aim of involving citizens in the collection of samples along the Tiber river
Biodiversity in rivers is subjected to pressures such as morphological alterations, pollutant inputs, climate change and invasive species. The results of a 2022 survey on the attitudes of tourists along rivers towards nature highlighted a lack of generalized knowledge about biodiversity in these areas. Hence the idea of promoting a Citizen Science initiative for the monitoring of freshwater molluscs along the Tiber river was born, also aimed at raising awareness of the threat to biodiversity in rivers following the alterations of the morphological processes of the rivers. water, localized or widespread releases of polluting loads (including plastics), ongoing climate changes.
The project aims to involve citizens in general in the collection of samples along the river. The collection of information can take place through a photo to be posted on social media with attribution of the GPS coordinates of the places where they were taken using the hashtag #teveremolluschifantastici.
