Concluded the COP28 in Dubai
The United Nations Climate Conference in Dubai (COP28) closed on Wednesday 13 December with an agreement approved in the plenary session, with the aim of maintaining the commitment to limit the increase in global temperature to within 1.5 °C.
Among the contents of the final agreement some elements need to be underlined:
- Taking a “global stocktake” to accelerate climate action before the end of the decade
- the reference to overcoming fossil fuels to achieve climate neutrality by 2050
- the call for a new commitment to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
- a new goal of tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency by 2030
- accelerating efforts to phase out coal power generation without compensation
- the gradual elimination of inefficient subsidies for fossil fuels
- the acceleration of zero- and low-emission technologies, including nuclear and carbon capture and storage technologies
