The lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) in the area of Parmigiano Reggiano
The European Commission recently reported research conducted by ISPRA as a case study for the use of birds as indicators of biodiversity in intensified agricultural systems.
The study was conducted by ISPRA researchers in collaboration with the IRSA-CNR and the University of Milan, as part of the LIFE FALKON project, in the Po Valley, one of the most populated and intensively cultivated regions in Europe. Here it emerged that the presence of the lesser kestrel, a small bird of prey of conservation interest, is associated with a greater diversity of the community of birds linked to agricultural environments. In particular, this happens in the areas dedicated to the production of Parmigiano Reggiano. The study shows how the lesser kestrel is in all respects a symbolic species for biodiversity in the agricultural environment and how agriculture can exist, even partially intensified, that respects the needs of birds which are currently particularly threatened.
