May 21
Italian Environment Minister Stefania Prestigiacomo has
announced financial support to the Global Invasive Species Database
(GISD), it is the public database of the Invasive Species
Specialist Group (ISSG) of IUCN, which is recognized as the most
authoritative and comprehensive database about invasive alien
species on a global level. Following the appointment of Piero
Genovesi as ISSG Chairman, the GISD database will be soon hosted at
ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research)
in Rome.
The Italian Ministry of Environment is committed to provide
financial support for improvements to the GISD, particularly
integrating it with new information services, thus increasing
support for the "decision makers".
The commitment of the Italian minister is a first contribution to
the commitments made with the Syracuse Chart, signed at the G8
Environment, which seeks to develop and strengthen measures to
prevent and control invasive alien species, including strengthening
the world information systems.
