International Day for Biological Diversity
On May 22nd, as usual since 2002, the international community will celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity, promoted by United Nations to raise public awareness on the issues related to biodiversity. The theme for this edition will be Invasive Alien Species (IAS), considered as one of the greatest threats to biodiversity and to the ecological and economic well-being of society and the planet. Even the Article 8 (h) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), signed in Rio in 1992 and gathering today 191 countries, encourages its contracting parties to prevent, monitor and tackle the IAS proliferation.
