High risk that Atlantic bluefin tuna will soon be gone forever: European Commission proposes that EU should press for a ban on international trade

16 March The proposal will be discussed with Member States in order to reach a common EU position for the next meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), taking place in Doha, Qatar, from 13 to 25 March 2010 where 175 Governments will meet and discuss on urgent measures to tackle illegal wildlife trade and protect the livelihoods of the rural poor. According to the European Commission it is necessary to preserve  healthy bluefin tuna stocks, and it is clear to everyone that overfishing is definitely not the way to go. An important part of the proposed solution is a special arrangement for artisanal fishing vessels.
