Results of monitoring of an hydraulic barrier
March 30
The hydraulic barrier prevents the migration of contaminated groundwater outside the site, requiring a significant amount of data for planning and considerable effort to manage the maintenance and monitoring of its effectiveness.
The increasingly frequent use of this technique led the Ispra, also on the request of the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, to establish a protocol with the aim to define the minimum elements to be acquired, the methods of development and the manner of representation of the data needed to assess the effectiveness of a hydraulic barrier.
The process defined in the document is an interactive process that allows, through the updating of the reference design (conceptual model of the site, the objectives of the operation, configuration of the barrier) and based on information collected during periodic monitoring , the estimate of the convergence of design data and those measured in the field, and then verifying the effectiveness of the intervention. Like all protocols, the document presented is subject to additions and / or updates that may become necessary to accommodate both site-specific situations
