Biodiversity: European Commission announces a new strategy for the next ten years
May 3 As an integral part of the Europe 2020 Strategy and in line with global commitments made in Nagoya in Japan last year, on May 3rd 2011 the European Commission presented a new strategy to protect and improve the state of Europe's biodiversity over the next decade. The strategy where international aspects are also contemplated, features six priority targets which address the main drivers of biodiversity loss aiming at anchoring biodiversity objectives in key sectoral policies: full implementation of existing nature protection legislation and network of natural reserves; improving and restoring ecosystems and ecosystem services; ensuring the sustainability of agriculture and forestry activities; safeguarding and protecting EU fish stocks; controlling invasive species and stepping up the EU's contribution to concerted global action.
