Waste: Let’s clean up Europe!
Let’s clean up Europe! is a campaign launched and promoted by the European Commission within the European Week for waste reduction 2014, coordinated by the European Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling and sustainable resource management. Every year, millions of tonnes of litter end up in oceans, beaches, forests and elsewhere in nature and several clean-up campaigns have been implemented in Europe to face the problem. The European Clean-Up Day, “Let’s Clean Up Europe!” will occur from 10 to 17 of May in 15 EU Member States and also in Andorra, Bosnia-Erzegovina, Norvegia, Serbia, and Turkey. It intends to coordinate all the initiatives in a single wide event aiming at involving and reaching as many citizens as possible to raise awareness about the value of waste, which, if properly collected can be reused or recycled reducing environmental impact, creating economic opportunities and jobs and contributing to move Europe towards a circular economy. The actions ( the cleaning of a green area, of a park, a square a beach or an area ) are independent, local and managed by citizens with the participation of local authorities, NGOs, companies and schools and can all be consulted on the web site of the national organizer in each Member State. In Italy, the coordinating Association is AICA ( International Association for the environmental communication ) and all information to participate is available on the web site www.envi.info and on the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ENVI.INFO . A unique opportunity to raise awareness among citizens about waste and cleanliness and to help them to change their behavior.
