5 Weeks to Apply for the 2021 European Green Capital and 2020 European Green Leaf Awards!

There are still 5 weeks left to apply for the European Commission’s prestigious European Green Capital and European Green Leaf Awards! Could your city be the next winner?

The European Green Capital Award (EGCA) recognises the environmental achievements of European cities (with 100,000+ inhabitants) and aims to inspire others to take positive action in making their cities fit for life. The European Green Leaf Award (EGLA) is given to towns and cities with populations between 20,000 and up to 100,000 citizens, for their environmental achievements and their potential to act as ‘green ambassadors’ for smaller cities. Applying for the Awards could give you the opportunity to receive feedback and guidance from environmental experts on your city’s approach to a number of environmental areas, including climate change, sustainable urban mobility, water, waste, nature and biodiversity, sustainable land use, air quality and noise.

Winning the prestigious titles brings many benefits to a city, including, a greater focus on environmental projects, a boost in local pride, international media coverage, increased tourism and foreign investment, in turn developing the local economy and helping to create employment.

EGCA and EGLA winners and shortlisted cities also gain access to the exclusive European Green Capital Network and European Green Leaf Network, providing them with support and a platform for sharing environmental knowledge and best practice. In addition, the winner of the 2021 EGCA will also receive €350,000 to help kick-start their green year, while the EGLA winner will receive €75,000 to help support their environmental programme for the year1!
