Interreg V-A Italia-Malta

Capitalization of awareness campaigns for an Italian – Maltese harmonization for a good state of environment

The project aims at "ready to use" capitalization of the strategic results obtained by two projects of the previous Interreg Italy – Malta, HARMONY (link pag ispra) and SenHAR.

ISPRA in CapSenHAR coordinated the implementation and enhancement of the Early Detection and Rapid Response system for the identification, monitoring and surveillance of non-indigenous species (NIS) developed within the HARMONY project.

The system, based on the collection of non-indigenous species data through Local Ecological Knowledge, a specific Citizen Science approach, involved a heterogeneous network of cross-border observatories, including fishers and divers.

The data collection methodology, prepared and used in Harmony project, has been replicated in new marine protected areas of the Sicilian-Maltese area, and it was "transferred" to the operators of the MPAs so that they could become active subjects in the collection of data and therefore in the surveillance system.
