Quality standards for freshwater sediments. Criteria and proposal
The development of specific quality standards for deposited sediments represents an important tool for evaluating the quality state of a water body and for defining monitoring and management strategies. Several approaches have been developed internationally for assessing the quality of freshwater sediments by setting specific screening values. This study reports the analysis and comparison of the most applied approaches with the aim of establishing a possible starting point for the development of national sediment quality guidelines.
