Biodiversity conservation strategies and policies at local level: statistical analysis models from the "Carta della natura" system of the Lazio Region

It is increasingly evident that the characteristics of the biodiversity of each region of the country are the final result of a historical process that has involved several generations who have managed their territories in often highly distinctive ways, determining a specific variety of natural and semi-natural landscapes. Here, a general quantitative methodology is proposed which, starting from the "Carta della natura" system and through the integration of environmental data, both naturalistic and anthropogenic, is able to provide an informed and detailed picture of the state of the environmental systems of a given region. In this document the results obtained by applying the quantitative method to the Lazio Region are presented. Among the most important results: identification of the minimum regional surface of the Lazio Region to be protected; identification of the ecological-environmental indicators that characterize the valuable biodiversity of the Region; assignment of valuable biodiversity to each of the 378 local administrative units of the Region (Municipalities); identification of a quantitative methodology (ECoAB) for the assessment of the Environmental Criticality of the municipalities of the Lazio Region.
