Inauguration of the Monte Cristo goats’s area of the Biopark of Rome

The area dedicated to the goats of Monte Cristo will be inaugurated on December 5, at Biopark (he only goats that live in the wild in Italy), exclusively in the Natural Reserve on the island of Montecristo, uninhabited island in the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, at serious risk of extinction, in fact, there are only 250  goats.

The Biopark has built  the fence of 1,000 square meters, with the double target of hosting a reproductive stock, for now of five animal, aimed at restocking the island, and spread awareness to the general public about the goats of Montecristo

The project Montecristo 2010

In order to preserve the goats of Monte Cristo and other species typical of the island, has been developed the project Life Montecristo in 2010,  coordinated by the National Forestry Department in collaboration with the National Park of the Tuscan Arcipelago, Biopark of Rome, ISPRA, and NEMO, which is funded by the European Union and co-financed by the Tuscany Region and the Province of Livorno.
The main objective of the project is the elimination of the black rat and of ailanto (a tree of Asian origin), alien species that are seriously threatening native biodiversity of the islands of Montecristo and Pianosa.
