Scientific experiment off La Spezia to measure sea level

An oceanic buoy will be located off Tino Isle near La Spezia coast on 2 July. This buoy is part of a scientific research activity carried out by JRC of the European Commission and the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) with the aim of monitoring sea level and identifying possible tsunami risks. After a period of testing this buoy will be moved to the Ionian Sea and Sicily channel where tsunami risk is higher. It is equipped with advanced tools enabling centimetric measuring of sea level by using differential GPS technique. Data collected each 5 second and sent in real time to a server allow tsunami early warning by the competent authorities. Measured data will be available at:
