Atmospheric emissions of PCBs and HCB in Italy from 1990 to 2006
Atmospheric emissions of PCBs and HCB in Italy from 1990 to
2006
This report focuses on atmospheric emissions of polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), whose estimates have
recently been introduced in the National air emissions inventary.
The survey begins with a brief analysis of the physico-chemical and
toxicological aspects related to the presence of such pollutants in
the environment, then with the identification of processes and
activities which may cause emissions. However, the central theme,
are the estimates of emissions into atmosphere from 1990 to 2006
and an examination of key sources. Finally, there is a list of
local monitoring campaigns conducted regarding Persistent Organic
Pollutants. It shows that special attention is paid, although in a
non-harmonized way at the national level, to dioxins, while for
PCBs and HCB monitoring campaigns are a much lower number.
