Towards an ecosystem approach of urban and peri-urban green areas's
Urban green areas are a fundamental resource for urban sustainability and citizens’ quality of life: beside their well-known social functions, they contribute to environmental quality in many ways, mitigating soil, water and air pollution, ameliorating urban microclimate and maintaining biodiversity. However, the level of integration of these various functions and benefits into local environmental policies and urban planning is actually very poor. Aim of the present work is to make a state-of-the-art of the national normative and interpretative framework for urban and peri-urban green areas and to propose potentially useful scenarios for a better integration of their multifunctionality into local planning.
