LIFE STREAMS project "Salmo ceTtii REcovery Actions in Mediterranean Streams"

The general purpose of the LIFE STREAMS Project is the adoption of concrete conservation actions for the Mediterranean trout (Salmo cettii). The project was started on 1/9/2019 and will end on 31/8/2023. Its objectives are: a) the elimination of sources of introgression (caused by the introduction of allochthonous trout for fishing purposes); b) the reduction of the rate of introgression of indigenous populations; c) improving the quality and reducing the fragmentation of water bodies, also with a view to increasing the resilience of indigenous populations to climate change; d) the fight against poaching.
The Project involves 6 pilot areas where monitoring and management actions will be implemented aimed at increasing the number and degree of purity of the Salmo cettii populations. The pilot areas are located in Sardinia and in the following protected areas: Majella National Park, Montemarcello-Magra-Vara Regional Park, Casentinesi Forest National Park, Monte Falterona and Campigna, Monti Sibillini National Park, Pollino National Park. The Natura 2000 sites in which the 76 sampling sites fall are in total 35.
