Urban Geology Expert Group
From 24 to 26 October ISPRA - Department for the Geological Survey of Italy, will host the second half-yearly meeting of the Urban Geology Expert Group of Euro Geo Surveys, the European federation of geological services.
Urban geology is an emerging branch of earth sciences that studies urbanized contexts and their interactions with the subsoil on which they arise. Several projects are being carried out in this area by the various European geological services, ranging from three-dimensional modeling of the urban subsoil to communication activities aimed at increasing citizens' awareness of: both the problems that may arise from the subsoil and the resources that it can make available to cities, also with a view to mitigating and adapting to climate change.
In this context, ISPRA coordinates and manages the Urban Geo-Climate Footprint project, the peculiarities of which will be presented in a public event on the last day of the meeting, or 26 October.

Urban Geo-climate Footprint meeting
Urban Geo-climate Footprint (UGF) is a new approach realized by the geologists of the Department of Italian Geological Service of ISPRA, that is the main tool to classify and compare urban areas from a geological point of view.
The cities, that from studies of United Nations will be by next 50 years a places where will live more than half of the global population, are in permanent interaction with the geological context where they are developing. This project activity is based on the assumption that cities with similar geological-geographical characteristics face the same challenges to face, both as regards geological problems and the consequences produced by climate change, with particular reference to their effects on the soil.
Therefore, having a tool aimed at grouping and classifying cities can allow a quick comparison and therefore a greater exchange of experiences and good practices between them.
The UGF tool, which allows this city classification activity from a geological point of view, was conceived and implemented by ISPRA within the Urban Geology Expert Group (UGEG) of the European Federation of Geological Services (EuroGeoSurveys) and also with the collaboration of a doctorate activated at the University of Granada (Spain).
The tool will be publicly presented for the first time in a streaming event and subsequently made public on the portal of the Geological Service of Italy. The presentation event, which will be held in English, will also be attended by some colleagues from other geological services who collaborate in the initiative within the aforementioned group of experts.
