Plastic Busters MPAs takes you on a journey in Sicily of learning, knowledge sharing and collective action towards a litter-free Mediterranean
On the occasion of the Ocean World Day (8 June), the team of Plastic Busters MPAs will go to the Marine Protected Area of Capo Milazzo to continue the investigation into the presence of the marine litter on the beaches. The activities had been suspended due to the blocks induced by COVID-19 and will finally resume from 8 to 10 June with this first summer expedition conducted jointly by the heads of the WAP of Capo Milazzo, experts from ISPRA, UNISI (University of Siena ), SZN (Anton Dohrn Zoological Station) and MIO-ECSDE (Mediterranean Information Office for the Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development).

The research campaign aims to conduct the first overall assessment of the marine litter phenomenon in the Capo Milazzo MPA, addressing the existing gaps on the quantity, types, sources, impacts and distribution patterns of the marine litter in the MPA.
Programme
8 June: at sea
Experts from ISPRA, UNISI, SZN and MIO-ECSDE and the heads of the WAP will conduct investigations on the floating marine litter in the waters of the Capo Milazzo WAP
9 June: coastal and seabed surveys
The managers of the Capo Milazzo MPA together with the experts of ISPRA, UNISI, SZN and MIO-ECSDE will conduct investigations on the waste present on the beach.
10 June: in laboratory
The final session will be broadcast by the ISPRA laboratories in Milazzo. During this session, the public will have the opportunity to see how the collected samples are prepared and analyzed in the laboratory
11 June
During this final event, the preliminary results of the monitoring activities conducted by ISPRA in autumn 2020 will be shared and the declaration of intent aimed at establishing the "Plastic Busters Network to combat marine plastic pollution in the Mediterranean" will be presented.
