History of italian mycology and first contribution to the correct nomenclature of fungi
This handbook is the English translation of the Italian manual “Storia della micologia italiana e primo contributo alla nomenclatura corretta dei funghi” (ISPRA, Manuali e Linee Guida 104/2013 – ISBN: 978-88-448-0592-0).
The principal goal of the "Wild Fungi Special Project" is to provide a set of non-conventional operational tools for the environmental quality assessment using fungi as biological indicators; furthermore, in the absence of a definitive international code of nomenclature for fungi, this manual is a fundamental tool to overcome the lack of uniformity in terminology due to the diversity of taxonomic classifications.
Made on the basis of the nomenclature rules in force from year 2012 and defined in the "International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants" (ICN) (Melbourne Code), the handbook intends to clarify the correct nomenclature of over 7,000 species of fungi; the English translation shall complete this "service" making it easily accessible to every mycological communities as well as to the various scientific communities at the international level.
