Transportation: European and national instruments for the improvement of air quality
Transport is one of the main sources of air pollution in Europe. As a result of effective policies, air pollutant emissions, in Europe and in Italy, have considerably decreased over the last decade, resulting in improved air quality for pollutants such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide or volatile organic compounds; whereas emission reductions of other pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and ozone have been less relevant with limited effects on air quality, due to complex links between emissions and air quality concentrations, characterizing this type of pollutants, but also due to implementation of inadequate measures.
This report supplies an overview of transport policies taken in European Union and particularly in Italy by regions and autonomous provinces in air quality plans.
