SUSHIN - SUstainable fiSH feeds INnovative ingredients
The project searches for new ingredients and underused raw materials to be used in feed for the main fish species reared in Italy (sea bass, sea bream and trout), with the aim of improving the biological performance of the species fed with innovative diets and the environmental footprint. The species are fed with flours obtained from insects, crustaceans, micro-algae and by-products of poultry slaughter. The tests are conducted on an experimental scale and validated in fish farms. The nutritional value of the new ingredients is assessed by monitoring the growth of the fish, the state of health and well-being, the quality and food safety of the products.
The project, coordinated by the University of Udine, is funded by AGER (Network Foundation for Agri-food Research) as part of the "Aquaculture" Project. 7 partners participate, forming an interdisciplinary network that carries out research activities by combining different professional skills and enhancing the specialization of institutions and researchers.
The project is aimed at:
- to test ingredients of animal and vegetable origin for innovative diets
- analyze the effects of innovative diets on the physiology and well-being of species
- measure the environmental sustainability of production cycles with new diets
- analyze the quality of the product raised with new diets
- study the impact on consumers of fish farmed with new diets
- transfer scientific knowledge to the aquaculture supply chain
- ISPRA is responsible for testing the innovative ingredients and assessing the physiological and well-being status of the three species covered by the project.
The project has a duration of 4.5 years, starting in February 2017
