Despite the increasing awareness of climate change impacts and the need to adapt, many of Europe’s cities and towns are struggling to handle the impacts of heatwaves, severe droughts and destructive floods. Two European Environment Agency (EEA) reports published today stress the urgent need for action to improve adaptation and resilience at local and national government levels.

ISPRA has been involved for years on the theme of adaptation with the aim of strengthening and improving knowledge on the impacts of climate change and to develop tools, methodological approaches, guidelines to support a more adequate implementation of adaptation to various levels of governance.

The National Climate Conference, to be held from 13 to 16 October, is the most important event of the year of Italy for climate, an initiative promoted by  Sustainable Development Foundation and by a group of companies in preparation of COP26, with the patronage of the Ministry of the Environment, ENEA and ISPRA, in collaboration with Regeneration 20 | 30, with the partnership of ANSA and with the support of SapereAmbiente, aims to become a reference event on the performance of Italy related to climate objectives.

The project AdriaCLim "Tools of information, monitoring and climate change for the adapting strategies in the Adriatic coast areas is funded by the cooperation programme Interreg Italy-Croatia and it is coordinated by Arpae and involves 19 partner between research institutes, universities, and companies of both Countries.

Online the Report Ispra "Climate indicators in Italy in 2019"

The year 2019 ranks at the third place among the hottest years since 1961, with an anomaly peak in June: + 4.25 ° C in the North, + 4.0 ° C in the Center, + 3.27 ° C in the South and Islands. The heat was particularly intense between 26 and 29 June, when new absolute temperature records were recorded in various locations in the north-west and in the Alpine sector, with peaks of 40 ° C in the plains and 35-36 ° C at about 1000 m of altitude.
The 15th report "Gli Indicatori del Clima in Italia" describes the Italian climate in the year 2019 and updates the estimate of climate variations in the last few decades. It is based on climate data, indices and indicators derived from the "National System for the collection, processing and dissemination of climate data" (SCIA) developed  by ISPRA in collaboration with national and regional meteorological monitoring networks.

This year the theme for the World Day of Desertification and Drought is (Food-Feed-Fiber) with the aim of raising public awareness of those unsustainable forms of production and consumption that contribute to soil degradation and consumption of water resources.

The trend of national greenhouse gas emissions. Focus on emissions from agriculture and livestock. The contribution of indirect effect gases and particulates matter.

Next 21 April, ISPRA will presents a videoconference that describe the emission trend in Italy: a global and detailed picture of the Italian situation on the trend of greenhouse gases from 1990 to 2018, a preliminary estimate for 2019 and some considerations on the first quarter of 2020 An in-depth analysis on the main emissive activities of the agriculture sector and to the  mitigation systems will follow. The day includes also final analysis of the other gases that have an effect on the climate but also on air pollution in the strict sense, up to the particulate matter, also considering in this case the historical series from 1990 to 2018 and focusing the main drivers that influenced the trends analyzed.
