The enhancement of abandoned mining sites in Italy

ISPRA published in 2006 the "census of dismissed mining sites", carried out throughout the national territory, covering a time span ranging from 1870 to 2006.

Consequently it initiated a census of parks, museums and mining eco-museums in Italy, within a wider project, continuously updated, called the "Italian Repertoire of Earth Sciences ".

Since 2009 ISPRA organizes the "Mining Day", a national event split into many local ones, for the promotion of the cultural mining heritage.

On October 2, 2015, it was held at the Expo in Milan, a workshop organized by ISPRA and the Lombardy Region with the Patronage of the Italian Association for the Protection of Industrial Archaeological Heritage (AIPAI), about the enhancement and recovery for cultural purposes of abandoned mining sites, reconverted as museums and parks after the end of production. During the workshop it was ratified the NATIONAL NETWORK FOR MUSEUMS AND MINING PARKS, promoted by ISPRA and the Lombardy Region.
