Fourth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

The last stage of UN negotiations in preparation for a post-2020 global biodiversity agreement is opening today in Nairobi.

As part of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) from 21 to 26 June 2022, the fourth and final session of the working group called to prepare the draft of a global agreement to stop and reverse the dramatic decline in biodiversity.

The global agreement will have to be approved at the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP), which will be chaired by China, and will be held in Montreal (Canada), from 5 to 17 December 2022.

The key objectives include:

  1. conclude the draft of the agreement, Gobal Biodiversity Framework for COP15, defining the objectives relating to conservation, sustainable use and sharing of benefits
  2. strengthen the role of indigenous peoples, local communities, youth and women and other stakeholders
  3. set a timetable for implementation through national biodiversity strategies and action plans and for periodic reviews of progress up to 2030
  4. define a framework for resource mobilization and other means of implementation
  5. develop in a sustainable way the potential contribution of nature, through the so-called nature-based solutions, to the mitigation and adaptation to climate change and to the achievement of other objectives for sustainable development
  6. chart the path towards an agreement on sharing the benefits of digital sequencing information on genetic resources (digital sequence information, or DSI)

In order to give technical and scientific support to the Directorate General for the protection of nature of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, ISPRA researche which are experts on issues related to the protection, restoration and sustainable use of biological diversity will participate in the meeting
