Risorgimento and the Italian Geology

The event took place at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence in the Salone dei Cinquecento, on November 25, 2011. 
The study day is one of the events organized for the 150th anniversaryof the unification of Italy and one of the activities and projects in line with the spirit and objectives of the Plan 2011, promoted by the ItalianNational Coordination Body - Dg for the Third Sector - Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, in accordance with the European guidelines.
The study day aims to remind important geologists and scholars of Earth Sciences, who have actively contributed to the Risorgimento andto the Unification of Italy, as well as to the establishment of the mainnational geological institutions (most still existing) when Florence was the capital of Italy. 
It was recalled the evolution of the Italian Geology in the fields ofEarth Resources, Explorations, Environment and Citizen Security,from the unification of Italy to the present day. 
During the Round Table were discussed the main issues of Earth Sciences nowadays and was also launched an appeal to the institutionsof the Republic for the enhancement of the Geological Sciences. 
At the end of the Round Table, participants were offered an Italian lunch in the Sala d'Arme of Palazzo Vecchio. 
In the Sala d'Arme were exposed the plastic model of the Battle ofCurtatone, by the Associazione Fiorentina Battaglie in Scala, and panels with the reproduction of geological relief maps of theGeological Survey of Italy. 
Two Guided Tours followed in the afternoon: the first one to thepalaeontological and mineralogical collections at the Museum of Natural History, the second one to the Collections of books and relics of the Risorgimento of the Fondazione Spadolini - New Anthology on the Hill of Pian dei Giullari.
