Multibeam
ROVs are used in conjunction with other tools. One of these is the multibeam or multibeam echo sounder, which allows you to generate a topographic map of the bottom. It is a sonar similar to the one used by dolphins and bats for orientation and the search for food. These animals emit sounds which, bouncing off objects, come back as an echo, allowing them to accurately identify the distance and size of the object based on the return time of the sound they emit.
