The requirements regarding the sulphur content of certain liquid fuels used in the European Union is one of the main measures to preventing acidification of ecosystems. In particular, the use of heavy fuel oil, gas oil and marine fuels in the territory and territorial waters was regulated by the Directive 1999/32 / EC and its amendments.
The directive requires that each member states submit an annual report in June to the European Commission on the sulphur content of liquid fuels used in their territory during the preceding year.
At the national level the art. 298 comma 2-bis of Legislative Decree 152/06 states that ISPRA, draw up annual report on sulphur content and the Ministry of Environment and Protection of Land and Sea send to the European Commission a summary document based on this report.
