Technology for All is the innovation forum, now in its eighth edition, dedicated to multidisciplinary paths of technologies for the environment, cultural heritage and the Smart City, scheduled in Rome from 14 to 16 November 2023.

6th World Landslide Forum

The 6th World Forum on Landslides will be held in Florence from 14 to 17 November 2023. The event is jointly organized by the UNESCO Chair on the Prevention and Sustainable Management of Hydrogeological Risks of the University of Florence, by the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) within the Global Promotion Committee of International Program on Landslides (IPL-GPC ), with the support of 5 United Nations organizations (UNESCO, FAO, WMO, UNDRR, UNU) and 4 federations of global scientific associations (ISC, WFEO, IUGS, IUGG).
The Landslide Science for Sustainable Development Forum constitutes a common platform to foster cooperation between scientists, professionals and policy makers dealing with landslides, with the aim of defining priority actions for risk reduction on a global scale.
The main aspects related to the study of landslides will be covered: monitoring and early warning, modeling, risk and hazard assessment, mitigation techniques, relationships with climate change.

Climate change and coastal erosion: in Italy 54 coastal municipalities have high erosion rates

Among the 644 Italian coastal municipalities, those with high erosion rates have been identified by ISPRA; there are 54 who to date have seen their stretch of coast retreat by more than 50% of the entire stretch of competence; there are 22 municipalities with an overshoot of between 50% and 60% of the coast; there are 16 between 60% and 70%, 8 between 70% and 80% and 7 between 80% and 90%. Rotondella in Basilicata appears to be the only municipality characterized by widespread erosion over the entire coastal stretch. If the number of municipalities appears limited, compared to a total number of 644 coastal municipalities, it should be considered that the percentages reported concern the entire coast of each municipality, also occupied by stretches that are not beaches and which therefore cannot undergo erosion , such as the stretches of rocky coast, the river mouths and all the anthropic works. Furthermore, the percentages do not show a "natural" trend of coastal dynamics, but downstream of all the coastal defense works and nourishment carried out.

Twenty-first session of the Committee to Review the Implementation of the Convention

CRIC 21, the twenty-first session of the Committee for Review of the Implementation of the Convention, subsidiary body of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), will take place from 13 to 17 November in Samarkand (Uzbekistan). The event will be attended by delegations from 197 countries that have signed the Convention, including Italy which has been a signatory to the UNCCD since 1994, as well as representatives of the private sector and civil society.

Land consumption and protection from risks: the role of territorial and urban planning

The sixth meeting of the cycle "Climate changes and extreme events: global aspects and local phenomena. Scientific knowledge and prevailing studies. mitigation and adaptation for better sustainability" will be held on November 8th. The event, which can be followed on Youtube, will address the topic of land consumption and the role of territorial and urban planning.

Second edition of the Global Land Outlook (GLO2), Land Restoration for Recovery and Resilience

The second edition Global Land Outlook (GLO2), Land Restoration for Recovery and Resilience it is one of the main reports on the state of soil and territory. GLO2 illustrates the motivations, enabling factors and paths through which countries and communities can prevent, reduce and reverse the process of land degradation, designing a program for the restoration of soil and territory and ecosystem functions, capable of changing the way we manage resources, creating development opportunities for people, increasing technical knowledge, generating new jobs and increasing the resilience of local realities.

Territorial governance and sustainability

Land consumption is a complex phenomenon, which is necessary to know in order to implement effective counteractions. It is not only important to know how much land is consumed, but also "where" (in an urban or rural setting) and for what use (residential, commercial, industrial; for a road, a school, a reservoir...).
These and other topics will be explored in depth during the first two sections dedicated to municipal planning tools and the photointerpretation of remote sensing products. In the third section the theme of urban regeneration as an alternative to land consumption will be addressed.

The movement and reuse of sediments in inland waters, coastal marine waters and lagoons: towards circular management

The event aims to explore the topic of sediment management in different environmental contexts, from a technical-scientific and regulatory perspective, bringing together subjects involved in different capacities and in the interest of municipal administrators. Despite the heterogeneity of data and the intrinsic complexity of sediments and other materials (e.g. plant residues), their management can be made simpler through versatile and easily accessible processing tools.

The Workshop is designed as an open working table, with spaces for the presentation of problems by various experts and for the identification of operational paths.

Contaminated sites and remediation in Italian municipalities

The conference "Contaminated sites and remediation in Italian municipalities" will be held on 25 October at 2.00 pm at the ISPRA stand.
During the event, the MOSAICO platform, the national information system on reclamation process sites, will be illustrated and there will be a moment of discussion between Administrators/Technicians on the experiences relating to the management of reclamation procedures in their territory

Presentation of the Report “Land consumption, territorial dynamics and ecosystem services”

On 25 October the 2023 edition of the Report "Land consumption, territorial dynamics and ecosystem services" by the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA) will be presented. The Report, together with the cartography and databases of indicators available for each Italian municipality, provides an updated picture of the land cover transformation processes and allows us to evaluate land degradation and the impact of land consumption, urbanization and infrastructure on the landscape and ecosystem services.

ISPRA participates in the 40th Anci annual assembly

From 24 to 26 October, in the Blue Pavilion of the Genoa Fair, the annual Assembly of the ANCI returns, now in its fortieth edition. The title chosen this year is “Three colors on the heart. Mayors unite Italy." The inaugural day on Tuesday 24th will take place in the presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
Mayors, institutions and the business world will meet to discuss current and future challenges.

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The International Day for Natural Disaster Risk Reduction, known worldwide as the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, is celebrated on October 13.
The day was created at the behest of the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. The objective of establishing this day is to send an important signal to the governments of all the countries of the world as well as to international organizations and the global population, to reflect on the ever greater frequency and consistency with which natural disasters occur.

XI edition of the National Festival of Planet Earth Week

Between geology, nature and culture: two itineraries in the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park

On the occasion of the 11th edition of the National Festival of Planet Earth Week (1-8 October 2023) ISPRA proposes two scientific treks in the Monti i Simbruini Regional Natural Park. Through a double itinerary, a different way of using the territory is offered - slow tourism - which allows the observation of geological, hydrogeological, geomorphological, botanical and faunal characteristics. ISPRA fully shares the slogan that accompanies the festival this year: a more informed society is a more involved society.

Rome: walking in geodiversity

On the occasion of the second international day of geodiversity proclaimed by UNESCO, ISPRA and the Italian Society of Environmental Geology are organizing the urban excursion "Rome: walking in geodiversity" for a class of the Liceo Scientifico Marcello Malpighi school.

Walking in the historic center you will be able to reconstruct the geological history that allowed the birth and development of the Eternal City and admire the decorative stones coming from the territories of the Roman Empire, which today adorn churches and monuments and represent a glimpse into the geodiversity of the Mediterranean basin.

Vajont, 60 years after the disaster

In the occasion of the 60° anniversary of the Vajont disaster, the National Council of Geologists, the Fondation Centro Study of CNG, the Regional Orders of Geologists of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, in collaboration with the Municipalities of Longarone, Erto and Casso and with the Vajont Foundation, are organizing a conference on 29 September 2023. Advanced Technologies for Landslide Identification and Monitoring

The workshop is organized by the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences (University of Cagliari) and the Order of Geologists of the Sardinia Region and will analyze the cutting-edge technologies used in research and industry to detect and monitor landslides.

What flows beneath our feet? Rome's groundwater in the context of a changing climate

The water supply of the city of Rome comes mainly from springs located several kilometers from the city center, in Apennines or volcanic areas. However, significant water resources are stored underground in the largest municipality in Italy. These resources, the groundwater, are contained in real natural underground reservoirs, the aquifers, which in the Roman area can be of a volcanic and alluvial nature, in some cases even overlapping, which create a rather complex underground water circulation.

Annual conference of the Italian Cartography Association

The Conference is an opportunity to reflect on the nature and potential of cartography as a communication tool, and as a science oriented towards dialogue with institutions, administrations, private actors who are interested in spatial phenomena, such as Earth sciences, geography, archaeology, natural and forestry sciences, agronomy, urban planning, architecture, planning, economics, political sciences, environmental engineering, history etc.

Status of remediation of contaminated sites in Italy. MOSAICO: a tool for everyone

MOSAICO is the national information system on contaminated sites. Created by ISPRA in the SNPA context with the participation of Regions and Autonomous Provinces, it allows for knowledge of the state of the art of reclamation procedures on the national territory and facilitates the dissemination of information to public opinion, the press, the public Administration AND the decision-making bodies.

Geosciences IR: shared geology at the service of all

The innovative geological research infrastructure for sharing data, services, tools and applications for the benefit of everyone to act effectively in the territory

On September 20th at RemTech Expo, the international event specialized on the themes of rehabilitation, regeneration and sustainable development of territories, a conference dedicated to the GeoSciences IR project will take place.

ISPRA researchers will illustrate the innovative geological research infrastructure for sharing data, services, tools and applications for the benefit of everyone to act effectively in the territory.

RemTech Expo 2023

From 20 to 22 September in Ferrara the XVII Edition of RemTech Expo will be held, the Environmental Technological Hub specialized in the themes of recovery, regeneration and sustainable development of territories. Also this year ISPRA will participate in numerous meetings.

Fourth edition of the "Summer school of geomorphology, ecology and biology in the marine and insular environment"

The fourth edition of the "Summer school of geomorphology, ecology and biology in the marine and insular environment" which was held in Favignana from 11 to 16 September, ended with great success. The initiative is organized annually by the ISPRA in collaboration with the University of Chieti-Pescara and Sapienza, University of Rome.

The Saline of Tarquinia: a treasure of geodiversity and biodiversity

ISPRA will organize, in collaboration with the Carabinieri of the Biodiversity Protection Unit of Rome, the excursion "The Saline di Tarquinia: a treasure of geodiversity and biodiversity". The Saline di Tarquinia State Nature Reserve is a hyperaline wetland, one of the few remaining in the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the extension of which various geological-environmental aspects are represented.The salt pan is recognized as a site of community importance (SCI) and a special protection area (SPA).The excursion will allow access to the integral reserve area and will give observe closely the relationship between the industrial exploitation activity, now ceased, and the conservation of the environment and of unusual habitats, as well as of protected rare species.

Subsoil and georesources: integrated use, experiences, opportunities and prospects

The National Council of Geologists and the CNG Study Center Foundation are organizing the conference "Subsoil and georesources: integrated use, experiences, opportunities and perspectives" on 14 September as part of Geofluid 2023. An ISPRA researcher will participate in the round table.

On 5 July, the European Commission published the text of the proposal for a Directive for soil monitoring and resilience, necessary for the achievement of the health and soil objective by 2050. The main objectives of the proposal for a Directive are: to stop the processes of land degradation, prevent and mitigate the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss, increase resilience against natural disasters, ensure food security and reduce soil contamination
